Military veterans invited to learn more about educational options
KOKOMO, Ind. — Military veterans from the Howard County area are invited to a Veteran Appreciation Event sponsored by Ivy Tech Community College Kokomo Campus. The open house, the first of its kind, is being planned for 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 9, as part of the annual Howard County Military Appreciation Week.
Veterans will gather in the lobby of the main building at 1815 E. Morgan St.
“We want to say ‘thank you’ to our veterans for their service and their commitment to our country,” said Melissa Dwight, veteran benefits coordinator at Ivy Tech Kokomo. “It’s also an opportunity for Ivy Tech to provide information for veterans who are interested in pursuing an education – but may not think it’s possible.”
Dwight also serves as advisor to Stars and Stripes, the campus’ chapter of the national Student Veterans of America. Members of that organization as well as veterans serving as Veterans Affairs work-study assistants and members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1152 will be participating. A feature will be visits to the Veterans Resource Center housed in the Student Life Building.
“At this event, not only will veterans have the chance to speak with me and other Ivy Tech representatives, but they will have the chance to network with other veterans and enjoy giveaways, as well as refreshments,” Dwight said. “At Ivy Tech, we are here for our veterans, and I am eager to speak about their educational opportunities. It’s also an opportunity for them to learn more about how their children can use the educational benefits earned by the veteran’s service.”
Ivy Tech has consistently been recognized as a “Military Friendly school” by Victory Media, a leader in successfully connecting the military and civilian worlds and publisher of G.I. Jobs, STEM Jobs, and Military Spouse magazines. The Kokomo Campus offers a Boots 2 Books scholarship for veterans and their dependents and provides a variety of support activities through Dwight’s office.
