More than 100 compete to support student activities

KOKOMO, Ind. — With 53 two-person teams from around the Midwest, Ivy Tech Community College Kokomo’s 3rd annual Winter Cornhole Classic continued the tradition of cold weather fun and raised about $3,700 to support extracurricular development activities for the campus’ students.

“We had teams from Illinois and Ohio, as well as Indiana … even one team nationally ranked in cornhole circles that competes in tournaments around the nation,” said Shannon Niedzwicki, director of Career Services at Ivy Tech Kokomo Region and chair of the event. “With growing campus and community support, along with expanding recognition in the cornhole world, we look forward to an even better tournament in 2015. As the tournament gets more competitive, we’ll attract more and more teams from outside the Kokomo area.”

A full day of competition filled the Kokomo Event & Conference Center Feb. 22 as teams competed best-out-of-three for one match and then double elimination. Winners included Team Black Jack, with teammates Mark Steiner from Yorkville and Chris Day from Joliet, Ill., who won the $500 first prize; Team Propane, with teammates Rod Gilbert from Edon, Ohio and Don Reed from Montpelier, Ohio, with the $200 second prize; and Team Wisemoon, with teammates Terry Wiseman from South Bend, Inc. and Braden Moon from Jonesboro, Ind., who went home with the $100 third prize.

Proceeds from the tournament benefit Ivy Tech Kokomo’s Student Life and Development Program, funding opportunities for educational and cultural activities outside the classroom.

The event is sponsored by Adlers Feed Express, The Andersons, Home Depot and Ivy Tech. Co-sponsors include Hawg Heaven, Beck’s Hybrids, Quality Plumbing and Heating, Thermodyn, Cintas, Mulligan’s Sports Pub, Parrett’s Meat Processing and Regions Insurance Group Inc.
