Ivy Tech Kokomo to host 3rd annual Winter Cornhole Classic

KOKOMO, Ind. — Cornhole – the Midwestern pastime that has become a national phenomenon – is not a sport many people associate with winter. But it’s time to brush up on your toss because Ivy Tech Community College Kokomo is hosting its 3rd annual Winter Cornhole Classic.

The tournament will be staged at the Kokomo Event & Conference Center, Saturday, Feb. 22. Doors open at 8:30 a.m. and competition begins at 10 a.m.  Participants may register online and by mail in advance or at the door the day of the event. Registration is limited to the first 64 teams.

Online and mail registration is available at $30 per two-person team until Feb. 20; after that date, teams may register at the door only at $40 per team.  Teams that register by Feb. 7 will receive the early-bird bonus of Cornhole Classic t-shirts for team members. The tournament’s first place prize is $500; second place, $200; and third place, $100.  Online registration and complete details are available at ivytech.edu/kokomo .

“We are very excited about plans for this year’s event, building on how the tournament has grown in its first two years,” said Shannon Niedzwicki, director of Career Services at Ivy Tech Kokomo Region. “This is a great family event for the community of Kokomo and Ivy Tech Community College.  We invite everyone who plays corn hole – not just Ivy Tech students and alumni – to come out for a fun day raising money to benefit the Student Life and Development program and help fund opportunities for extracurricular student development. We encourage people to meet the early-bird deadline of Feb. 7 to be sure they have a spot in the tournament and receive the commemorative t-shirt.”

Michelle Simmons, vice chancellor for Student Affairs, said, “Ivy Tech is committed to providing its students with educational and cultural activities outside of the classroom,” adding, “The money raised from registration fees from this event will help us fund activities such as taking groups of students to visit an art gallery, tour our nation’s capital, see a live theatre performance, or attend a regional student leadership conference. All of these kinds of activities enrich the lives of our students.”

The event is sponsored by Adlers Feed Express, The Andersons, Home Depot and the Ivy Tech Alumni Association. Co-sponsors include Hawg Heaven, Beck’s Hybrids, Quality Plumbing and Heating, Thermodyn, Cintas, Mulligan’s Sports Pub, Parrett’s Meat Processing and Regions Insurance Group Inc.
