Advanced manufacturing training scholarships available

 

KOKOMO, Ind.— Scholarships are available to those who qualify for training at Ivy Tech that will give them an advantage when competing for jobs in manufacturing. Ivy Tech Corporate College will be offering the Certified Production Technician training in Kokomo and Logansport by mid-March.

A Certified Production Technician (CPT) credential can open the door for employment and can be earned in only eight weeks. This credential provides training in four critical areas including: safety, quality practices and measurement, manufacturing processes and production, and maintenance awareness.

 “We need to increase the pool of qualified applicants for these employers,” said Jan Bailey, executive director of Corporate College.  “And we will by providing this training.”

“This knowledge, this credential, can give an applicant a big advantage over another. We have employers who look to those who complete our CPT training ahead of other applicants.”

Filling manufacturing positions is a challenge for many manufacturing employers. Three common themes resonate with plant managers and human resource directors—lacking advanced skills, poor communication skills and inability to pass a drug screening.

“When we meet with employers, we hear these same challenges over and over,” said Jennifer Hughes, program manager for Ivy Tech’s Corporate College. “There are manufacturing jobs out there and the number of them will increase as workers flock to bigger manufacturers to work.”

Only those who reside in Cass, Howard, Miami, and Tipton counties can receive scholarship funds. Interested persons must first undergo a drug screening as part of the process to apply for scholarship funds. “The application process itself takes some time so I encourage those who are interested to contact me right away so the steps can be completed before training begins in mid-March,” said Hughes.
