Dr. Henry Louis Gates Jr. to kick off Ivy Tech Community College’s 50th Anniversary celebration

KOKOMO, Ind. —Ivy Tech Community College starts a year-long celebration commemorating its 50th Anniversary with a statewide kick-off event hosted by the Ivy Tech Kokomo Region. Dr. Henry Louis Gates Jr. will present Finding Your Roots at the Kokomo Event & Conference Center on Jan. 25 at 7 p.m.

“Dr. Gates’ appearance follows the celebration of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. This event will truly reflect Dr. King’s vision of peace, service and unity.” said Susan Maxson, chair of the event. “Dr. Gates has become known as the most prominent face of contemporary American genealogical research. The college is thrilled that we will kick off the 50th Anniversary with this dynamic, nationally-renowned speaker.”

Harvard professor, author and literary critic, Dr. Henry Louis Gates Jr. is an expert in exploring the past. Through his work with PBS, Dr. Gates examines race, culture, and identity using genealogy, science and history to unveil who we are and where we come from. His presentation at the kick-off event will captivate those who attend and inspire them to find their roots.

Tickets are $50, including dinner, and are available online at ivytech.edu/kokomo/gates.html. Each person who attends will receive four tickets to the Indiana Experience at the Eugene and Marilyn Glick Indiana History Center, compliments of the Indiana Historical Society, valued at $28.
